DHCP-assigned DNS servers: When you connect to a network, your router typically assigns DNS server addresses automatically. If your VPN client fails to override these assignments, your device will continue using your ISP's resolvers.
WebRTC in browsers: Certain browsers use a protocol called WebRTC for real-time communication features. This protocol can expose your actual IP address and, by extension, your DNS resolver, independent of your VPN status.
How to Test Your Connection Right Now
Verifying whether your VPN or proxy is leaking DNS data requires only a few minutes and no special technical knowledge.

Practical Solutions to Seal the Leak

Switch to a VPN client with built-in DNS leak protection. Many reputable providers have updated their software to force all DNS traffic through the encrypted tunnel. If your current client lacks this feature, it may be time to reconsider your provider.
Configure DNS manually. You can override your router or operating system's DNS settings to use a privacy-respecting resolver.
